A lot of people came to Izborsk on February 25 to greet the spring and to say farewell to winter. Maslenitsa was celebrated with a lot of merry making and fun. The guests enjoyed interactive programs, contests and games, performances of folk music ensembles, khorovods (circle dances), prize drawings and gifts.
Performances were given by the famous “Skaz” Russian folk music ensemble, named after Vitaliy Rumiantsev and the ensemble of folk singing “Zabava” in the museum’s Entertainment Garden.
Everyone had great fun playing folk games with the participants of “Ochelye” folk music ensemble and enjoyed their singing of Russian folk songs.
A concert entitled “An Hour of Russian Romances. The charm of bygone years” was given in merchant Belyanin’s house. Romances created by Alexander Varlamov, Alexander Gurilyov, Alexander Alabyev, Sergey Rahmaninov and other composers were performed by the teachers and students of Pskov Regional College of Arts named after N. Rimsky-Korsakov.
Children and their parents had great fun playing a game entitled “An Izborsk House and Everything Inside”, solving 19th century riddles and taking part in a master class in making Maslenitsa souvenirs.
Everyone had a chance to practice bow and crossbow shooting in the yard of Merchant Anisimov’s house. Children enjoyed the games, organized for them in the Museum square and by the walls of Izborsk fortress.
Every visitor of Izborsk Museum’s exhibitions became a participant of "Maslenitsa Good Luck” lottery and received a gift. A competition for the main prize of the day, a bag of flour, was held as well.
Every visitor had a chance to try delicious pancakes with favorite fillings and herbal tea in Izborsk Museum’s café, as well as dishes of traditional Seto People cuisine.
The burning of the straw effigy of Maslenitsa in a bonfire was definitely the main event of the day.
4500 people took part in Maslenitsa Festivities in Izborsk.
