State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»

We invite everybody to come to Izborsk and see our exhibition “Alexander Nevskiy, the defender of Russian territories” located in the upper passage of Izborsk fortress wall. 

The exhibition features 26 displays dedicated to the life and heroic deeds of Alexander Nevskiy, his role in the history of Russia, in strengthening Russian statehood and Orthodox faith, in the defense of Pskov and Izborsk territories. Grand Prince Alexander Nevskiy is one of the most famous people in the history of Russia, an outstanding military commander and a shrewd politician. He managed to protect the northwestern borders of Russia from the Swedish and Livonian invaders. During the hard time of the Mongol Tartar invasion, the disunity and weakness of Rus he sought consolidation of internal political forces, avoiding an open confrontation with the Horde.

The exhibition  also tells about the canonization of Alexander Nevskiy by the Russian Orthodox church, about the Nativity of the Theotokos monastery in Vladimir where Alexander Nevskiy was initially buried, about the transferal of his holy relics to St.Petersburg and how he is commemorated in different cities of Russia.

The exhibition has been developed by  Ekaterina Ignatyeva and two young Izborsk Museum professionals Sofiya Ivanova and Leonid Plokhov, this work being their first project in Izborsk Museum Reserve.
