13 June 2019

A cultural, educational, exhibition and inter-museum project “The images of Pskov and its area in the artistic legacy of the Roerichs” starts in Izborsk Museum Reserve on June 21, 2019. The event is timed to coincide with the Hanseatic Days 2019 in Pskov. Workshops, concerts and openings of new exhibitions are planned in the framework of the project.

The new exhibition in Izborsk State Museum Reserve for History, Architecture and Land is a bright testimony to the deep connections our fellow countrymen have with Russian culture getting inspiration in their favourite corners of Pskov, Ostrov, Porkhov, Izborsk, Pechory, Vyshgorod, as well as in Senno and Maly villages.
This project has already united museum professionals, scientists and public men from several regions of Russia and other countries. Several institutions have agreed to support the series of exhibitions entitled “The images of Pskov and its area in the artistic legacy of the Roerichs”. They are the Institute of History and Material Culture of Russian Academy for Sciences (St. Petersburg), St. Petersburg State Museum-Institute of the Roerich Family, the State Museum Oriental Art (Moscow), State Museum of Architecture named after Schusev (Moscow), Volgograd Museum of Fine Arts named after I.I Mashkov, Nicholay Roerich's Museum (New York) and other museum and library institutions from several regions of Russia, from near and far abroad.

The project starts with the exhibition of reproductions in Izborsk State Museum Reserve for History, Architecture and Land. It features paintings and drawings by Nikolay Roerich inspired by the images of ancient Pskov Land and photos taken in Pskov by his wife Elena Roerich, as well as some photos of Nikolay Roerich’s younger brother Boris Konstantinovich.

What makes the exhibition especially attractive is the fact that many representatives of the Roerichs family made photos and compiled albums of photos amazing for the deepness of their artistic expression and documentary value. The heritage of the Roerichs-photographers impresses by their types, geography of the represented objects, the variety of themes and persons. Photographic images created by the representatives of the Roerich family are a special page in the world photographic art. The curator of the inter-museum project “The images of Pskov and its area in the artistic legacy of the Roerichs” is Vladimir Leonidovich Mel’nikov, an art history PhD and a laureate of the award given by the Government of St. Petersburg in the sphere of art, literature and architecture (2010). He will give an open lecture at the opening of the first exhibition in Izborsk Museum Reserve and also speak about the future development of the project.

This event will take place on June 21, 2019 at 15.00 p.m. in Izborsk in merchant Beyanin’s house (Pechorskaya str., 39).

Everybody is welcome to come.
